Herbert Charles Bates was born on 15th August 1881 (Mildenhall Q3-1881 4A:611), baptised Mildenhall 25th September 1881, son of John Joseph and Rebecca
BATES (née PALMER).
1891 census...Aged 10, he was at North Road, Mildenhall with his father Joseph J BATES [31] journeyman carpenter born Upwell; his mother Rebecca [[35] born Lakenheath; brother Joseph E [13](gardener) born Lakenheath; sister Eliza [11] born Lakeneheath. The rest of the siblings were all born in Mildenhall, brothers Arthur W [8], John H [3] and Leonard [2]; sisters Mary [7], Bertha [5] and Jessie [7 months]. 1901 census...Aged 19 he has not been found in this census. At Beck Row Road, Mildenhall were his parents, brothers Arthur (ironmonger's porter), John (errand boy), Leonard and Eric [4]; sisters Mary, Jessie, Annie [9], Edie [6] and Laura [4 months]. The new siblings all born in Mildenhall 1911 census...Aged 29 single, bricklayer's labourer, he was lodging at 1 Rochester Road, Carshalton with Henry and Frances NURSE and their family. At "The Field", Mildenhall were his parents, brother Eric and sister Laura. All 13 children survived. No pension card has been found |

Herbert enlisted in Kingston on Thames. His Army service records have not been found.
The 7th East Surreys were at the Quarries, Hulluch. The war diary:- "13th- The Division ordered to attack in conjunction with a general attack more or less along the line. 12 noon The artillery bombardment began, and continued until 2o.c.smoke and gas began at 1 and was continued to 2 o.c. The attack was made by the 46th, 12th and 1st Division. Its main object was to straighten our line and if possible to take from the enemy one or two very nasty positions he had which enfiladed our line. The 46th Division were to take the Hohenzollern Redoubt and Fosse No.8. The 12th Division, the QUARRIES and the trench from Quarries to gun trench, and gun trench. The 1st Division to take the line of the LENS-LE BASSEE ROAD. Result-The 46th Division took part of the Hohenzollern Redoubt but could go no further, the 12th Division took the NW corner of the QUARRIES, failed to take trench from QUARRIES to Gun Trench.
